JOB SHADOW: JOB REFLECTIVE NARRATIVE/I shadowed Doctor Joel Ramirez, a sports medicine doctor, here in Lindsay in a clinic. I showed up at the clinic around 8:30 in the morning and waited until I was called in the back to meet Ramirez. I dressed formally, not over dressed. I choose to shadow Doctor Joel Ramirez because I knew has had experience and knows what it took to become a doctor. I wanted to know how medical school was. How he studied for the MCAT then how many schools to apply to and when. How did he pay for all of his schooling. In my job shadow I followed Dr. Ramirez as he meet with his patients and treated them.
Before we started seeing patients I talked to doctor Joel Ramirez about my passion to become a doctor. I explained how I've always liked helping people and how science has interested me at a young age. Also how my own surgery changed the way I see medicine. I explained how i already have my mind set on what career I want in the medical field, a cardio thoracic surgeon. Then he started talking about what happened in his life and what motivated him to become a doctor. He then talked about what schools he went to, from Fresno City, to UCLA then to UCLA for medical school. He then went on to explain that medical school isn't easy its very rigorous. Then how to study for the MCAT to get a high score and when to take it. He told me to not take too many science classes in the beginning of college because I need to get used to the school, so I don't burn myself out. After our decision Doctor Joel Ramirez and I went to go see some patients. Within the 5 hours of me shadowing him we saw a total of 11 patients, all for different reasons. It was my first time seeing how the process worked. A nurse would come in and inform doctor Joel Ramirez about the patient and any new concerns; then he would explain what needed to happen all in medical terminology. I came into the room with Dr. Joel Ramirez as he examined his patients he explained what he was doing to me. I got to see him use an ultra-sound to guide a needle in a patient. The whole experience was new and amazing to see. Everything was done very efficiently, including walking. I learned that medical school wasn't going to be easy, let alone taking the MCAT and getting accepted to a medical school. The first two years are courses like college and the last 2 are clinical. Most people will know what they want to do their 3rd year in medical school. That you have to be very driven to become a doctor because it is very time consuming process. I also learned that doctors need to be able to multi-task efficiently because they have to care for many patients. |
Dr. Joel RamirezCareer plans:I plan on attending a 4 year university to study biology. I want to go to a university with research opportunities where i'm able to do undergraduate research and study aboard my senior year. If I need to transfer, ill do what it takes to get into the school I want. I'm going to have a career in the medical field, surgical because I want improve/save people's lives. I'm leaning towards cardio thoracic surgery because it interest me.
I'm more motivated to become a doctor, this Job Shadow has opened my eyes to a whole new world, just a view how the medical field works. I don't plan on become a sports medicine doctor because I feel like it doesn't fit my personality like doctor Doctor Joel Ramirez explained to me. I already have plan on become a cardio thoracic surgeon. Who knows maybe ill change my mind during 3rd year. |
